Antony Muia, WA
Sicilian Boys
Mixed media on MDF
90 x 120cm

2006

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
In the 1890's a series of black and white photographs were taken of Sicilian boys. The open air photography depicted local boys in classical poses, reclining in the countryside, comfortable in their nudity. Sicilian Boys is a present day depiction. One figure looks straight at the viewer, almost defiantly. Although involved in the act, he seems somewhat detached. In comparison, the second male is completely absorbed in the moment. There is a blasé atmosphere, one free of guilt or judgement. This piece is a testament to masculine eroticism, to the playfulness and timelessness of Sicilian boys.
